Travel Tips
- Umrah: book permits in the Nusuk app. Nusuk handles Umrah permits and Rawdah slots in Madinah. Take a screenshot of your QR permit and save it offline, because signal near the Haramain area can be weak at peak times.
- Hajj and Umrah rules change every year. Hajj-season dates, permits and entry rules are updated annually, and Umrah is restricted during Hajj season. Check the official Nusuk app and the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah before you book and again before you set off.
- Pick your season. Mid-December to mid-March is the most comfortable period. Summer often reaches about 45°C, so plan outdoor sights like Diriyah and Hegra for early morning or sunset. Taif’s rose harvest runs roughly late March to early April.
- Download offline maps for the desert. Cities and main highways are well covered. Drives to AlUla, the Edge of the World (about 100 km from Riyadh) or desert camps can have gaps, so save maps first.
- Set up the local apps. Careem and Uber for rides, HungerStation or Talabat for food, and Apple Pay or Samsung Pay in most shops.
- Check your visa and travel advice. Apply only on the official Visit Saudi site. The tourist visa is multiple-entry, valid for a year, with stays up to 90 days. Check your government’s latest advice before booking, especially for southern areas such as Asir.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which network does the Saudi Arabia eSIM use, and can I share my data?
A: It runs on STC 5G. Hotspot is allowed, so you can share data with a travel companion’s phone or a laptop. The plan has no speed reduction after you use a set amount of data.
Q: Do WhatsApp calls, FaceTime and Google Maps work in Saudi Arabia?
A: Yes. Your data exits through Belgium (BE), so WhatsApp voice and video calls and FaceTime work normally on this eSIM. Maps, rideshare and messaging apps work too.
Q: Why does my IP location show Belgium?
A: Your data is routed through Belgium (BE), so websites and apps may show your location as Belgium. This is normal and doesn’t affect your signal or speed in Saudi Arabia. Maps and ride apps still use your phone’s GPS for your real position.
Q: Can I use this eSIM for Umrah and the Nusuk app?
A: Yes, it gives you mobile data for Nusuk, maps and rideshare. It’s a data-only plan with no Saudi phone number. Keep your home SIM active for SMS verification codes, and register in Nusuk with the same phone number and email you used for your visa. Hajj and Umrah rules change every year, so check Nusuk and the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah before you travel.
Q: Does it work in AlUla and remote desert areas?
A: Coverage is strong in cities and along main highways, with gaps in remote desert. Download offline maps before you drive to AlUla, the Edge of the World or desert camps. This plan covers Saudi Arabia only.
