Hungary eSIM: Telenor Hungary 5G & Vodafone 5G Data for Budapest, Lake Balaton & Tokaj
The DealeSIM Hungary eSIM connects to Telenor Hungary 5G (now Yettel) and Vodafone 5G (now One), so you can get online as soon as you land in Budapest. Hotspot is included, there’s no speed reduction, and you can activate within 180 days of purchase. Your data exits through France or the Netherlands (FR/NL).
Travel Tips
- Validate your Budapest ticket before you ride. Paper tickets must be validated before your trip starts: stamp them at the metro entrance validators, or right after boarding a tram or bus. Inspectors check tickets and issue fines on the spot. Plan your routes in the BudapestGO app.
- Pay in forints, not euros. Hungary uses the forint (HUF). Cards and contactless are widely accepted, but carry some cash for markets, small eateries and tips. If a card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency or euros, choose forints, because the conversion adds a markup. Use bank-branded ATMs rather than standalone ones, and check your restaurant bill, because many places already add a service charge.
- Take a marked taxi or use Bolt. Use a clearly marked taxi with a company logo, or the Bolt app, which shows the fare before you confirm. Ignore touts at the airport and the train stations, and walk away from any flat “airport price” that replaces the meter.
- Know the thermal bath etiquette. Shower before you enter the water, bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a towel (you can rent them on site), and use your wristband to open your locker. Skip glass and outside alcohol, and ask before you photograph other bathers.
- Watch for pickpockets and the bar scam. Crowded trams (lines 2 and 4/6), the metro and the area around St Stephen’s Basilica are the usual spots. Be wary if a friendly stranger leads you to a bar, because the bill can be huge. Tap water is safe to drink, and 112 is the emergency number.
- Download offline maps for day trips. 5G is concentrated in Budapest and other major cities, and rural areas are mostly 4G. Save maps before heading to Lake Balaton, the Tokaj wine region or the Great Plain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which networks does the Hungary eSIM use, and can I share my data?
A: It connects to Telenor Hungary 5G and Vodafone 5G. Telenor Hungary is now called Yettel, and Vodafone Hungary is now called One. Hotspot is allowed, so you can share data with a travel companion or a laptop. The plan has no speed reduction.
Q: Why does my IP location show France or the Netherlands?
A: Your data exits in France or the Netherlands (FR/NL), so websites and apps may show your location as either country. This is normal and doesn’t affect your signal or speed in Hungary. Maps and ride apps still use your phone’s GPS for your real position.
Q: Will it work outside Budapest, around Lake Balaton and in the countryside?
A: Expect 5G in Budapest and other major cities, and mostly 4G in rural areas. Lake Balaton is well covered, but some countryside pockets can be slower. Download offline maps before you go.
Q: Do WhatsApp and phone calls work, and do I need to register?
A: WhatsApp and other data-based calling apps work over mobile data. This is a data-only plan, so there’s no Hungarian phone number for regular calls or SMS. Local prepaid SIM cards need photo ID to activate, but this eSIM doesn’t need any Hungarian registration. Keep your home SIM active for SMS verification codes.
Q: Can I use it when I cross into Austria, Slovakia, Czechia or Croatia?
A: No, this plan covers Hungary only. If you’re visiting neighbouring countries, the Europe 35 countries eSIM covers other European destinations with a shared data pool, so you don’t have to switch eSIMs.
