Travel Tips
- Book Auschwitz-Birkenau early. Entry is by time slot, and popular periods (spring, summer, early autumn) can sell out weeks ahead. Passes are personal, bag rules are strict and there’s airport-style security. Oświęcim is about 70 km from Kraków, so allow 1.5 to 2 hours each way. The museum recommends visitors be at least 14. Booking windows, prices and rules can change, so check the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial’s official website before you book or travel. Save your tickets offline before you leave.
- Take the train between cities. PKP Intercity connects Warsaw, Kraków and Gdańsk, and you can book online in advance. Jakdojade is the common app for city buses, trams and metros, and Bolt is widely used for rides.
- Pay in złoty, by card or phone. Poland uses the złoty (PLN), not the euro. Contactless payments are widespread. BLIK, the local instant-payment system, needs a Polish bank account, so use a foreign card instead.
- Match the season to the region. Summer suits the Baltic coast (Gdańsk, Sopot) and the Masuria lakes. December brings Christmas markets in Kraków and Wrocław. The Tatras around Zakopane work for hiking in summer and skiing in winter.
- Download offline maps for mountain and lake trails. Coverage varies on remote trails in the Tatras, the Bieszczady Mountains and Masuria. Save maps and your route before you set off.
- Check Schengen entry rules before you fly. Poland is in the Schengen Area. Check the latest entry requirements, including the EU’s EES and ETIAS systems, on official EU or Polish government sites.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Which networks does the Poland eSIM use, and can I share my data?
A: It connects to Play 5G and Orange 4G. Hotspot is allowed, so you can share data with a travel companion or a laptop. The plan has no speed reduction.
Q: Why does my IP location show France or the Netherlands?
A: Your data exits in France or the Netherlands (FR/NL), so websites and apps may show your location as either country. This doesn’t affect your signal or speed in Poland, and maps still use your phone’s GPS for your real position.
Q: Do I get a Polish phone number, and do I need to register?
A: This is a data-only plan, so there’s no Polish number for calls or SMS. Polish prepaid SIM cards must be registered to a named user, but this eSIM doesn’t need that. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime or other apps for calls, and keep your home SIM active for SMS verification codes.
Q: Can I use it when I cross into Germany, Czechia, Slovakia or Lithuania?
A: No, this plan covers Poland only. If you’re also visiting neighbouring countries, the Europe 34 countries eSIM covers Poland and other European destinations with a shared data pool, so you don’t have to switch eSIMs.
Q: Will it work in the mountains and around Auschwitz?
A: Coverage is good in cities and towns and along main roads, and Oświęcim is a town, so you’ll have signal there. Remote trails in the Tatras, the Bieszczady Mountains and Masuria can have weak spots. Download offline maps, and save your Auschwitz tickets offline.
